S P A C E S: chelsea's new to me midcentury couch

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

i feel like when you get your first place you get a hamy down couch from a friend or something from the thrift store. when i moved out of my single bed apartment this summer i chucked the given to me couch and decided to go on a long journey (felt like forever) to find the couch of my dreams. at first i was willing to pay a pretty penny for a midcentury couch but i always felt in my gut that if i kept on searching every thrift store in virginia and craigslist page that i would find it. i am so glad i waited. we were on a mini vacation with andrews parents last month in a small town mount jackson and i found the one.
yeah it smelled pretty bad after being stored in a basement for probably thirty years.. and it had these hideous silver legs. but with a little love, lots of hours soaking and scrubbing this baby.. it is perfect. i threw on these big yellow pillows just so when you are lounging on the couch you have a comfy pillow to rest your head on. (but when we have guests they are put away!)

YUM! // no-bake avalanche bar recipe

during our last trip to Leavenworth in Eastern, WA we stopped by the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for a treat [as usual] and decided to try something called "Avalanche Bars". they looked like rice krispie treats mixed with peanut butter fudge and m&m's, chocolate and marshmallows. we were NOT disappointed upon the first taste! the combination of textures and flavors compliment each other so well, and after that, I was determined to find the recipe and make them myself.
with the help of Pinterest, I of course found the exact copy cat recipe! and it's SO EASY! no baking required. the recipe called for chocolate chips, but we liked the version we had with mini m&m's, so that's what I used. and to make them more festive for Halloween, I picked out and used only the orange and brown!

here's the link to recipe I used HERE...

...& here's what you'll need & how you do it!

ingredients //
  • 1 (12 oz) bag white chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1.5 cups Rice Krispies
  • 1.5 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips [or m&m's!]
supplies //
  • medium microwave-safe bowl
  • large mixing bowl
  • mixing spoons/spatula
  • measuring cups
  • microwave
  • small glass pan
1 // start by dumping your bag of white chocolate chips into a microwave safe bowl. then add peanut butter on top of the chips.
2 // set aside. then in your large mixing bowl, measure out Rice Krisipies and mini marshmallows and toss together.
3 // microwave white chocolate and peanut butter mixture on 30 second intervals and stir in between until it is all combined and smooth!
4 // grease your glass pan with cooking spray and set aside. let the white chocolate peanut butter mixture cool slightly before pouring it over the rice krisipies and marshmallows and mixing it all together. you don't really want the marshmallows to melt!
5 // once cooled and combined, add the mini m&m's or chocolate chips into the mixture. I like the m&m's because it adds a little color!
6 // when it's looking yummy and mixed together, spread out into the glass pan evenly. the bigger the pan, the thinner the bars, so I prefer a smaller pan so they are a bit thicker like the ones Rocky Mountain sells ;)
7 // place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, then cut into squares, serve and enjoy! if you aren't addicted after one bite... we need to talk.

I hope you try these super yummy bars!

2. First off, how do you love married life?!

Ah, I love it so much!! It’s so fun to get to do life with your best friend. Everything with him is better, and he makes me better. I could go on for days about it.. but really I’m just crazy blessed.

3. What do you love about living in Portland?

Portland is so great! I honestly couldn’t see myself anywhere else, it feels like home here. I love the rainy cozy weather, the amazing food, the local coffee shops, and the people. It has such a small town feel for a city and I love that, the best of both worlds! And not to mention, it’s gorgeous!

4. If you were a flower which flower would you be?

Hmm probably a white garden rose. I just love the simplicity and elegance of them. Plus, they will forever remind me of my wedding since they were in my bouquet!

5. What places would you recommend to visit / eat / see in Portland?

Gosh, there are so many places! I’ll just list a few ;) My favorite coffee shops are Barista (their vanilla lattes are the.best.ever.) and Heart Coffee. Favorite restaurants: Oven & Shaker, Screen Door, Tilt, Bamboo Sushi (which is where we go for almost all of our date nights cause we can’t get enough..). And if you’re in the mood for ice cream..nothing beats Salt & Straw, it will change your life. The Portland Rose Garden and Multnomah Falls are must sees, so beautiful. Also, Schoolhouse Electric SO great. It’s a vintage furniture showroom with a floral shop and coffee shop inside, and it’s also where Alex proposed to me last year!

6. Where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully starting a family! I want to travel and go see the world with Alex first, and then when we’re ready have some littles. I’ve always had a heart for adoption so we would love to start the adoption process! I know I’m not in control, so we’re open to wherever God takes us in life.
