make-up monday: beachy waves for short hair

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset
i've been receiving a lot of requests for a tutorial on how i do my beach waves on my shorter hair [as seen in my last makeup tutorial!]. so, here it is, i've attempted to explain it in the easiest way possible and even included a short video clip to help you see the process!

i have some natural wave/texture, as you will see in the first scary photo, which helps achieve this look. most of the time i will wash my hair the night before, sleep on it, and wake up with crazy bedhead waves that need a bit of taming. but because i like the crazy/messiness of it, i just encourage it along with the help of my flatiron and a few products!
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

1. skinny flatiron
2. clip to section hair
3. sea salt texturizing spray
4. comb or brush
5. hairspray

let's get started...

one //
this is my crazy fluffy, frizzy bedhead. but its better than starting with straight hair, so it's all good.

two //
section hair in the nape from ear to ear. take about 1-2 inch sections of hair, and begin at the top of the hair strand. you are going to be using a method similar to curling ribbon with scissors. ha, sounds funny, i know. you are going to begin at the top and wrap the hair around the flat iron nearly 360 degrees, and at the same time pull and slide down the strand. sounds confusing but its not, i promise.

three //
i find that this layer isn't the most important because it's so short and hard to make a "perfect" wave, so i just kinda mess with the ends and don't fuss too much. the other hair covers it anyway. let down the next section of hair from your temples to crown area. i don't worry about parting my hair until the top section. continue the same ribbon curling process.
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

four //
i made a small video clip of the motion you should be doing. this is the same process all over the hair. i always curl away from my face on both sides. i hope this helps! it's a hard method to explain but so easy to do.

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

five //
the top section you will want to find your parting, i chose a deep side part but sometimes i center part it too! when you're done, mess it up, break apart the waves, this is an imperfect, messy look! then add texturizing sea salt spray and a little hairspray to hold it all in place.

and that's it! the messier the better. don't try to over-perfect it, it's beachy and summery and carefree! it looks even better the next day, but sometimes it can get a bit frizzy!

let me know if you try this on your short hair!

i recently became obsessed with this rad gal's instagram feed after finding her through a comment she left on a photo of mine regarding our mutual love of bell bottoms! i soon after learned she lives in portland oregon, which is only like 3 hours from me. [!!!] needless to say, i was ecstatic over the possibility of meeting the girl behind the camera who takes amazing photos and has the psychedelic 60's/70's vibes i am always channeling. and then even more excited at the thought of her possibly taking MY photo, making me look [or at least feel] like i belong in First Aid Kit or someone who could have dated George Harrison. go follow her!

+ + +

1 // your style is on point & i would love to raid your closet/go vintage shopping with you: what are 3 of your staple clothing items you could never live without?
Frye booties, Minnetonka braided leather all weather hat, and these psychedelic Janis Joplin-esque pants I scored for $10 at Buffalo Exchange.

2 // your photos are so inspiring! how did you start taking photos & what inspires your photography?
My mother shot all of my childhood photos on her Pentax k1000, you could say film runs through my blood. Day to day reality tends to bore me, but ironically I only ever shoot my closest friends, which helps me create these timeless, intimate abstractions of everyday life. The vintage Polaroid feel of Neil Krug and the nostalgic work of Petra Collins really inspires my work. And of course, good ole rock n' roll.

3 // what's your favorite part about taking a photograph?
I love making people feel beautiful. Helping women see themselves in a different light through the lens is what keeps me shooting and happy.

4 // if you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be & where would you plant yourself?
A ponderosa pine, which are scattered all throughout my hometown of Sisters, Oregon. They stand firm and relentless against the test of any season or element, and I would forever get to grow close to home.

5 // what are your 5 items you'd bring on a deserted island with you?
My Canon AE-1, a polaroid camera, as much film as possible, a hammock, and my travel diary.
Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

6 // where do you see yourself in 5 years personally & professionally?
I will forever call the Pacific Northwest home, but I don't see myself settling into any certain place or career for years to come. I am too preoccupied with the allure of travel, of immersing myself in foreign peoples and culture. After a long while maybe making my way home and hopefully working for Free People.

7 // what's the best part about living where you do, & do you want to live anywhere else?
I've been all over America, but no place will ever have such a hold on my heart as Oregon. Beer, mountains, bearded men, and folk music galore... what more could a girl ask for?

8 // describe your personality in 3 words:
Inquisitive, introspective, and passionate.

9 // if you could trade lives with anyone dead or alive for one day, who would you be?
Marie Antoinette; Speak french, live in Versailles, eat cake and lounge in beautiful clothes all day, vive la vie!

10 // share a piece of advice or a message you'd love to broadcast to the world:
Spend time alone, stick to your gut, and live fearlessly... the most important relationship of your life is with yourself.

these are the days

"these are the days.. " from a song of an open road by walt whitman is a very important piece of writing to me. it is a reminder to be present. i constantly find myself wondering about the future, the next thing, but never really to where my feet are planted now. i told myself that this year would be a year of being present. i found this awesome " i am.." series on one of my favorite blogs eat sleep cuddle and we decided to put our own little spin on it.

chelsea

I am happy when.. the temps are cool, surrounded by the ones i love (family, kaitlin, kittens, andrew, puppy), drinking a warm cup of coffee & curled up with a book.

I am grateful when..  the leaves have changed & the colorful tights are brought out.

I am nervous when.. I am starting something new. The unknown is a scary place.

I am proud when..  I am doing what I love. After finishing a wedding, a painting.. its such a satisfying feeling.

I am anxious when… I am running late.

I am at peace when.. I am content. Those are the moments when I feel most joy.

I am wondering when..  I will actually move to Seattle. It's been a dream for almost a decade. But the time has never been right, I am ready for the time to be right.

I feel most like myself when… I am laughing or photographing.  Joy + Passion.

I am waiting for when…  I realize, what's next.

I am happy when... I wake up to the sun shining through my bedroom window.

I am grateful when… I see or experience genuine acts of kindness toward others.

I am nervous when… I fly on an airplane over the ocean.

I am proud when… I think about where I once was and where I am now.

I am anxious when… I hear anyone talk about hospitals, needles, blood, veins, internal organs, etc.

I am at peace when… I spend quiet time alone with my bible and journal, especially outdoors.

I am wondering when… I will ever feel like an adult.

I feel most like myself when… I am surrounded by the people I love unconditionally and who love me in return.

I am waiting for when… I can finally realize my dreams are my reality.

make-up monday: smoky summer bronze

summertime typically means we don't always wear a lot of makeup, or makeup at all. lately i haven't been wearing eyeshadow at all. even when i do wear a "lot" of make-up, it still isn't actually a lot for most of people. this look requires no eyeliner and a few different shadows. today i was in the mood to play around with my favorite urban decay naked 3 palette and create a smoky bronzy summer evening look topped off with nude lips and lots of bronzer!
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

let's get started!

1 // applied tarte amazonian clay 12-hr foundation with my fingers. i used this stuff in california because it doesn't melt off in hot weather. it's not my absolute favorite, but it's good!
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

2 // concealed under my eyes with physicians formula conceal Rx concealer in fair light. this stuff is SUPER pigmented, a little goes a long way!
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

3 // buff laura mericer mineral powder all over my face to set the foundation and blend with my flat top elf brush.
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

4 // filled in my brows using my milani brow fix kit. see my brow tutorial here.
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

5 // contoured and bronzed with my elf contouring blush and bronzer duo, only using the bronzer and an angled powder brush. focusing on cheekbones, temples, nose, and jawline.
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

6 // started the eyes using the lightest matte white in my naked 3 palette "strange" all over lids up to the brow bone. then used a fluffy crease brush to blend "nooner" above the crease from inside to outside corner of the eye.

7 // then using a less fluffy crease brush i added a combination of "factory" and "liar" into the outermost corner of the eye, outer V area, and then used a small shader brush to blend the same colored under the bottom lash line as liner.

8 // curl lashes and then, TONS of mascara. if you're getting really fancy, apply flase lashes! i used L'oreal voluminous miss manga mascara in black.
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

9 // i love nude lips with smoky eyes and bronze skin, so i chose to use L'oreal color riche lipstick in 800 "fairest nude". this is the best nude because it still has a slight pink tone and doesn't look like concealer on your lips, ew!
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

that's it! simple smoky eye that is wearable enough for daytime but also appropriate for date night or going out with friends. this look also looks beautiful with a bold, red lip!
